Subnautica 2 Biomods
Unlock Subnautica 2 Biomods with the Bio Scanner, Modification Station, active and passive mod effects, scan targets, and best picks.
Subnautica 2 Biomods Overview
Subnautica 2 Biomods are player adaptations managed through the Bio Lab and Modification Station. In the current Early Access build covered by the source videos, the system has five active Biomods and ten passive Biomods, but you can only slot one active and one passive at a time.
The first Bio Lab near the starting Life Pod gives you the starter choices. To unlock the rest, you need the Bio Scanner upgrade attached to the regular Scanner, then you scan specific creatures or biological targets. Treat these as Early Access routes and recommendations, because the videos all note that more slots and more Biomods may be added later.
- Starter active Biomods: Dash and Pathfinder.
- Starter passive Biomods: Sea Skimmer and Oxygen Control.
- Later unlocks require the Bio Scanner upgrade.
- Modification Station / bench is found around the Alien Ruins route.
- Current slot limit: one active Biomod and one passive Biomod.
How to Unlock the Modification Station and Bio Scanner
For the Modification Station route, head east from the Life Pod toward the Alien Ruins, roughly 1,300 meters away. If you already have the Alien Ruins beacon, follow that marker. This route crosses the Collector Leviathan arena, so travel on the surface with the Tadpole when possible, or use cover near the seabed if the Leviathan starts chasing you.
After you pass the Collector Leviathan trench, keep moving east toward the large tower rising from the water. The Alien Ruins sit near that tower, and the Modification Station scan is inside the structure. Scan it before leaving so you can use Biomod management properly.
The Bio Scanner upgrade is in a crash near the power plant route. From the Alien Ruins / Modification Station area, travel about 600 meters on a 120 degree bearing. Look for a crash on the side of a cliff around 130 meters deep, repair the door with the Repair Tool, go left inside, descend through the interior, use the air pocket or bubbles if needed, and scan the Bio Scanner upgrade at the bottom.
- Start at the Life Pod or Alien Ruins beacon.
- Travel east toward the Alien Ruins, about 1,300 meters from the Life Pod.
- Cross the Collector Leviathan arena carefully; surface-skipping in the Tadpole is the safest fast route shown.
- Find the large tower and enter the nearby Alien Ruins structure.
- Scan the Modification Station / bench inside.
- From the Alien Ruins, head about 120 degrees for roughly 600 meters.
- Repair the crash door, move through the wreck, and scan the Bio Scanner upgrade near the bottom.

Active Subnautica 2 Biomods
Active Biomods are triggered manually with the ability key. Dash is the strongest general-purpose pick in the current build because it helps with travel, surfacing, and quick repositioning. Electric Discharge is the best defensive alternative if predators are your main problem.
Sonic Echo can help find nearby resources after you scan the Collector Leviathan, but its value depends on how hard those resources are for you to see. Chum Cloud distracts predators, but the videos rate it below Electric Discharge because it is aimed, shorter-lived, and less reliable against multiple threats. Pathfinder is useful only when you expect to get lost inside caves or wrecks.
- Dash: starter active; short movement burst; best everyday active pick.
- Pathfinder: starter active; leaves a trail for caves, wrecks, and confusing routes.
- Sonic Echo: scan the Collector Leviathan; pings nearby collectable resources.
- Electric Discharge: scan an Electric Geordie / electric creature; creates a predator-deterring shock around you.
- Chum Cloud: scan Toxic Sponge and Hound Gar; fires bait that distracts predators briefly.

Passive Subnautica 2 Biomods
Passive Biomods stay active without pressing an ability key. Water Retention is the strongest survival passive in the current videos because it doubles water gained from drinking, and water is more annoying than food until stronger water generation exists. Oxygen Control is excellent early because it sharply slows oxygen loss while you stop moving to scan or inspect something.
Sea Skimmer is a good speed option before vehicles, especially when moving close to the seabed or flat structures. Homing Sense is situational but useful for finding powered bases, wrecks, platforms, and missed blueprint sites. Slow Metabolism and Dermal Garden both reduce food pressure in different ways, while Water Secretion is better later if multiple passive slots become available.
- Sea Skimmer: starter passive; faster movement near surfaces and terrain.
- Oxygen Control: starter passive; oxygen drains much slower while not moving.
- Bioluminescence: scan Sand Skiff / Sand Spear and Electric Geordie; adds body glow in dark areas.
- Camouflage: scan Bullethead; makes you harder to see while standing still.
- Water Retention: scan Coral Crab; water sources give much more hydration.
- Homing Sense: scan Surge Jelly and Hammerhead; reveals nearby powered structures.
- Threat Sense: scan Hover Thorn; warns when threats are nearby.
- Dermal Garden: scan Needler Mango; periodically grows edible algae in your inventory.
- Slow Metabolism: scan Nibbler Mango; slows food loss.
- Water Secretion: scan Water Slug; periodically creates filtered water packets.
Best Biomods to Equip First
For most players, use Dash as your active Biomod until you have a specific reason to switch. It gives immediate value while traveling, escaping, surfacing, and crossing open water. If you are working in predator-heavy late-game routes, Electric Discharge is the strongest defensive swap.
For passive Biomods, Water Retention is the best long-run survival pick from the tier-list video, while Oxygen Control is the strongest beginner-friendly option before you solve oxygen comfort with vehicles and upgrades. Sea Skimmer is still worth using early if movement speed matters more than oxygen safety.
- Best active overall: Dash.
- Best defensive active: Electric Discharge.
- Best resource-finding active: Sonic Echo, if visual spotting is difficult.
- Best passive overall: Water Retention.
- Best early passive: Oxygen Control or Sea Skimmer.
- Best exploration utility passive: Homing Sense.
- Lowest priority in the current one-slot build: Pathfinder, Threat Sense, Dermal Garden, and Water Secretion.
Bio Scanner Targets and Where to Look
The videos describe the Bio Scanner unlocks as creature-driven. Some targets are near the starter biome, while others require crossing into the Alien Ruins, deep water, or the late-game side of the map. Scan with the Bio Scanner attachment specifically; normal Scanner entries do not unlock the later Biomods by themselves.
Use this as a practical target list rather than a coordinate-perfect checklist. The videos often give biome landmarks such as the Life Pod, Alien Ruins, giant tree / late-game area, deep trenches, power plant, and Collector Leviathan arena instead of exact coordinates for every creature.
- Collector Leviathan: Sonic Echo; found in the large trench between early and late-game areas.
- Electric Geordie / electric creature: Electric Discharge and part of Bioluminescence; found in deeper late-game waters.
- Toxic Sponge: Chum Cloud; starter-area caves.
- Hound Gar: Chum Cloud; near the Alien Ruins / late-game side.
- Sand Skiff / Sand Spear: Bioluminescence; sandy starter areas.
- Bullethead: Camouflage; canyon walls and late-game areas near the Alien Ruins side.
- Coral Crab: Water Retention; around hot starter-area terrain, roughly east from the Life Pod in one video.
- Surge Jelly and Hammerhead: Homing Sense; early southeast / east routes from the Life Pod.
- Hover Thorn: Threat Sense; northern edge of the late-game area.
- Needler Mango: Dermal Garden; deep late-game trenches.
- Nibbler Mango: Slow Metabolism; around the Angel Comb area.
- Water Slug: Water Secretion; common in starter and some late-game waters.
